Vypadalo to, jako by jen on a on sám věděl, kde skončí centr Denise Granečného. Svůj sprint z hloubi pole si načasoval dokonale, dostal se před obrannou linii Zbrojovky, odstrčil z cesty Tadase Kijanskase a lehounce hlavičkoval do sítě ke vzdálenější tyči.

Všechno šlo podle plánu, když Hůlka sundal v šestnáctce Ben Chaima k zemi a Lafata si z penalty připsal 200. ligový gól.

Jenže pak musel Kaya kvůli zranění odejít ze hřiště, oslavenec Lafata neproměnil naprostou tutovku a nad Letnou se začalo snášet rudé nebe. Klokani se čím dál víc dostávali do zápasu a stupňovali tlak. A pod ním nakonec Sparta zkolabovala, když Dúbravka vyrazil Dostálův dalekonosný pokus, Šmíd zareagoval nejrychleji a hostům zajistil cenný bod.

A VIEW FROM ENGLAND: Will a dream comeback for Baroš be a dream survival for Baník?

The opening weekend of the 2017-18 HET Liga season offered little in the way of surprises. Viktoria Plzeň sauntered past Dukla Prague; Slavia rotated, but did enough to see off Teplice, and Mladá Boleslav were far too preoccupied by their European away day in Albania this midweek and fell to newcomers Sigma Olomouc. Elsewhere, Slovácko and Jablonec served up a draw and Karviná beat everybody’s relegation favourites, Jihlava.

And Milan Baroš scored on his return to Baník Ostrava.

The fixture computer threw up Zbrojovka Brno as Baník’s opponents on the opening weekend and ČT sport duly decided to broadcast it, ensuring that the clash between Moravia and Silesia’s biggest clubs would be the HET Liga’s curtain raiser. With the game evenly poised at 1-1 and the game approaching the hour mark, Baroš was brought on. Twenty minutes later, he had scored.

Baroš’ goal was plucked straight out of the top draw and displayed that even at his age and with little pace to work with, he can still be a threat at this level. It seemed that he, and he alone, knew where Denis Granečný’s cross was going to end up. Timing his run from deep to perfection, he breezed past Zbrojovka’s backline, brushing Tadas Kijanskas out of the way with ease to head home at the far post.

The roar from the travelling fans was audible. Meanwhile, the TV directors and photo editors let out a cheer too. Not because the media is filled with closet Baník fans, but because Milan Baroš had made a beeline straight towards the nearest television camera, his eyes wide open, fists clenched and his face a contorted picture of emotion that mixed joy, rage and awe all into one. It was as if he could not quite believe the script, despite everybody else knowing the plot in advance. Baroš returns, Baroš scores. The earth continues to rotate on its axis, just as night follows day.

This is Baroš’ fourth stint at Baník and it will be his last – as a player, that is. It isn’t out of the realms of probability to see him on the club’s Board of Directors within a couple of months of his retirement next summer. Nor would it be unbelievable to see him join the coaching staff or become an ambassador. Whatever happens, he will remain forever associated with the 2004 Czech champions.

The storied tale of Milan Baroš and Baník Ostrava dates back to the early 1990s, when he joined Silesia’s biggest club as a twelve year-old. In 1998, he made his debut and two years later, he was named the Czech Republic’s Talent of the Year. In 2001, aged nineteen, he joined Liverpool for £3.2 million.

When Baroš left for Merseyside, few believed he would return, let alone continue to carve his name in Ostravan folklore. But in recent years, it has been his modus operandi: come back home for a short period of time, write headlines and then leave.

In 2013, he donated his salary to Baník’s youth teams and helped them stave off relegation before heading to Antalyaspor. A year later, he was back and in a bullish mood, playing only eleven games before being frozen out for launching a memorable tirade against the club’s then owners, who had played chicken with Baník’s very existence. His words may have drawn the ire of the suits but they only cemented his legendary status with the Chachaři. Like many supports, Baroš watched on from afar as Baník were finally relegated.

Now, though, he is back. And so are Baník Ostrava who, under new ownership, have spent a year away from the top flight and have returned in a stronger state than when the departed. Aged thirty-five and with one season left his in aging legs, Baroš opted to return once again to the Czech Republic’s steel city. And of course, the stars aligned for the veteran striker.

“It’s a great start for us,” the forward said to the press after the game. During the post-match comments, he made a point at reminding everybody that he is still nowhere near to full match fitness and that this Baník – bar a few individuals – is very much a young and inexperienced group. But to cap it off, he couldn’t resist dreaming big: “We are leading the league, now we just need to keep going.”

And you imagine they will keep going. Sure, there are huge question marks that surround this side but if the atmosphere down in Silesia is positive and the fans act as the twelfth man, there is no reason as to why they cannot comfortably keep their heads above water this season. It is a fool’s errand to make predictions after one game but a number of teams look considerably worse than Baník: Zbrojovka, Dukla and Jihlava, to name but three. However, Baroš will be integral to their fortunes.

As the oldest outfield member of the squad, he will be relied to not only provide the goals, but also help bring through some of the club’s youngsters. The immediate beneficiaries of his presence will be the Šašinka brothers, Jakub and Ondřej, who will both be vying for precious game time with the thirty-five year-old up front this season. The pair, both Czech youth internationals, have bright futures ahead of them and will quickly progress under the tutelage of the club’s elder statesman as they continue to learn the rough and tumble of senior football. This could be their breakthrough year.

It was Jakub, the older of the two, who started at Srbská and laid on the game’s opening goal when he won a header on the edge of the Brno box and brought the ball down for Robert Hrubý to strike past Dušan Melichárek. Jakub Šašinka, along with Tomáš Poznar, kept the Zbrokjovka defence busy up until Baroš’ arrival on fifty-eight minutes. The pair used their physicality to good effect and clearly tired their opponents out, allowing Baroš the time and space that he needed to make the pivotal difference.

Elsewhere

Speaking of surprises, did it come as a shock to anybody that Sparta Prague dropped points at home to Bohemians on Sunday?

Everything seemed to be going to plan when Lukáš Hůlka unceremoniously hauled Tal Ben Chaim to the floor, gifting Sparta a penalty and David Lafata the chance to record his two-hundredth goal in the Czech top flight. Lafata duly converted the spot kick, seemingly setting up a comfortable victory for Stramaccioni and company.

But then things began to falter. Semih Kaya was forced off just before half-time, adding another name to an already long injury list and David Lafata missed a gilt-edged chance to put the game beyond doubt, diverting the ball past the post from a couple of yards out when it looked easier to score.

As the clock wore down, Bohemians grew into the game and began to crank up the pressure. That pressure eventually told when, in the eighty-eighth minute, Martin Dúbravka parried a long-range effort from Martin Dostál and Michal Šmíd reacted quickest to secure a point for the visitors.

People will be quick to point the finger at Stramaccioni and his expensively assembled squad of players but there were always going to be growing pains at Letná. Two points dropped at this stage of the season should not come as a shock to anybody.

There were positives. The pair of Rio Mavuba and Georges Mandjeck looked extremely confident and comfortable with and without the ball, and could be dominate many a midfield this season. Plavšić buzzed around the pitch and appears to be a man for the big occasion and there was the return of Tomáš Rosický, who has played more minutes in one substitute appearance this season than he managed during the whole of 2016-17. I, for one, welcome the reappearance of Little Mozart.

Also elsewhere

Viktoria Plzeň looked in ominous form as they breezed past Dukla Prague, scoring four goals in the first half without reply. After an impressive display against FCSB and this decisive victory, is it time to admit those pre-season predictions of third were wrong and Vrba might actually lead them into the Champions League again?

Zlín narrowly lost to Slovan Liberec, though the result was largely inconsequential for the reigning MOL Cup holders. Down to ten men after Ibrahim Traore’s red card and after making all three substitutes, Bohumil Páník could only watch in disbelief as Petr Jiráček landed awkwardly on his shoulder and had to be stretchered off. With the tie goalles and down to nine men, Zlín tried to hold on against a rampant Liberec side but Matěj Pulkrab had other ideas, netting a late winner for the u Nisy side.
